德语中的同源词主要分为真同源词（true cognates）、部分同源词（partial cognates）、假同源词（false cognates）
- True cognates: have similar spellings and identical or similar meanings
- Wolf and wolf
- Echo and echo
- Sphäre and sphere
- Sommer and summer
- Partial cognates: look alike but have both similar and divergent meanings
- Existenz = existence but also subsistence
- Fleisch = flesh but also meat or pulp
- False cognates: have similar spellings but no related meanings
- Rock = coat, skirt
- Kind = child
